A Thai B2B SaaS founder asked me last week which AI engine his sales team should default to for prospect research. He’d been using ChatGPT for ten months and Perplexity for two. His reps were getting different answers from each, and conflicting opinions inside the team about which was more reliable. So we ran a controlled test — 80 B2B research queries across both engines, scored for accuracy, depth, citation quality, and time-to-useful-answer. The winner wasn’t who I expected. This piece walks through what we found, why each engine wins different kinds of B2B queries, and how to pick the right one for your team’s actual workflow.
The Test Setup — What We Actually Measured
We ran 80 queries split into four B2B research categories: vendor selection (20), competitive intelligence (20), market sizing (20), and strategic framework requests (20). Each query was run on both ChatGPT-5 (May 2026 build) and Perplexity Pro (Sonar Huge model). Three of us scored the responses blind on a 1–10 scale for accuracy, citation quality, actionability, and time to useful answer.
Important caveat — this isn’t peer-reviewed research. It’s a real-world working test from a working B2B team in Bangkok. Your mileage may vary depending on industry, geography, and how you frame questions.
Where Perplexity Wins — Citation-Heavy Research
Perplexity dominated on queries where the value was in *where* the answer came from. Vendor research queries like “What CRM do mid-market Thai SaaS companies use most?” returned 4–7 citable sources per answer on Perplexity, vs 1–3 on ChatGPT-5. For purchasing committees who need to defend recommendations with sources, Perplexity is the better default.
Specific scenarios where Perplexity won big
Competitive intelligence on Thai market — we asked “Compare Bitkub vs Satang Pro pricing structures.” Perplexity gave us current pricing pulled from both sites in February 2026. ChatGPT-5 gave us a confident answer based on training data that turned out to be 8 months stale. For anything where freshness matters, Perplexity has an edge.
The citation panel matters more than you think
Every Perplexity answer comes with numbered citations. You can click any claim and verify it instantly. ChatGPT-5 added inline citations in April 2026 but they’re less consistent — sometimes 6 cited claims in a response, sometimes zero. For regulated industries or financial decisions, Perplexity’s audit trail wins.
Where ChatGPT-5 Wins — Synthesis and Frameworks
ChatGPT-5 beat Perplexity on strategic and analytical queries where the value was in the synthesis, not the sources. Questions like “Build me a go-to-market framework for a B2B SaaS targeting Thai SMEs” produced richer, more structured outputs on ChatGPT-5. Eleven of our 20 framework queries scored higher on ChatGPT-5.
ChatGPT-5’s longer context and more developed reasoning chains showed up clearly here. Perplexity often returned good first drafts; ChatGPT-5 returned drafts that needed less editing.
The Hidden Difference — How Each Handles Thai Content
This is where things got interesting. Perplexity pulls heavily from Thai-language sources when your query references Thailand specifically. We asked both engines “What are the top Thai B2B SaaS companies?” Perplexity returned 11 sources, 7 of them Thai-language (including Brand Inside, Marketing Oops, and a Bangkok Post article). ChatGPT-5 returned 4 sources, all English.
For Thai market research specifically, Perplexity’s source mix is more representative of what actually matters in the local market. Don’t underestimate this — English-only sources miss a huge chunk of Thai B2B reality.
What About Claude and Gemini?
We didn’t include Claude 4.5 and Gemini 2.5 in the main test because the founder’s team only used ChatGPT and Perplexity. But informal testing suggests Claude is closer to ChatGPT-5 in quality (slightly better at reasoning, slightly worse at fresh data) and Gemini sits in the middle but with better integration into Google Workspace if your team lives there.
Honestly, the best teams I work with now use 2–3 engines depending on the task, not a single default. That’s friction, but it produces better outcomes.
Comparison: ChatGPT-5 vs Perplexity for B2B Research
| Use Case | ChatGPT-5 | Perplexity Pro | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor selection research | 7/10 | 9/10 | Perplexity | Citation depth |
| Competitive intelligence | 6/10 | 9/10 | Perplexity | Fresh data |
| Market sizing | 8/10 | 7/10 | ChatGPT-5 | Better synthesis |
| Strategic frameworks | 9/10 | 6/10 | ChatGPT-5 | Reasoning depth |
| Thai-language sources | 5/10 | 9/10 | Perplexity | Pulls Thai-lang sources |
How to Pick Between Them for Your Team
The framework I gave that founder — and what I’d give any B2B team in 2026 — is to assign engines to workflows, not preferences. Sales prospecting and competitive research go to Perplexity. Strategy work and content drafting go to ChatGPT-5. Anything regulated, financial, or audit-trail-critical goes to Perplexity. Anything creative or structural goes to ChatGPT-5.
Don’t let team members default to one engine for everything. They’ll get worse answers half the time and not know it.
Cost Reality for Thai B2B Teams
ChatGPT Plus is THB 700/month per seat. Perplexity Pro is roughly THB 720/month per seat. If you only buy one, you’re saving about THB 8,400 per seat per year. For a 5-person team, that’s THB 42,000/year in savings vs buying both. The question is whether that savings is worth the worse answers on half your queries.
For most B2B teams of 3+ people, paying for both is probably right. The hourly cost of a sales rep going down the wrong rabbit hole on stale data is way more than THB 700/month.
What’s Likely to Change in the Next 6 Months
Perplexity is reportedly building deeper synthesis capabilities — closing the gap with ChatGPT-5 on strategic queries. ChatGPT-5’s web browsing has gotten dramatically better since the March 2026 update. The gap between them is narrowing, not widening. By Q4 2026 these might be functionally interchangeable for most B2B use cases.
Also worth watching — Gemini 2.5’s deep research mode (announced in February) is genuinely competitive and integrated into Google Workspace where many Thai B2B teams already work.
The Real Lesson — Engine Choice Is Less Important Than Query Quality
Across all 80 queries, the biggest predictor of useful answers wasn’t which engine you used. It was how well-framed the question was. “What CRM should we use?” got mediocre answers everywhere. “Compare HubSpot vs Pipedrive for a 5-person B2B SaaS sales team in Thailand selling to manufacturing companies” got great answers everywhere. Train your team to ask better questions. That’s a bigger ROI than switching engines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should B2B teams use ChatGPT or Perplexity in 2026?
Both. Use Perplexity for vendor research, competitive intelligence, and any work requiring citation trails. Use ChatGPT-5 for synthesis, frameworks, and strategic analysis. Most B2B teams of 3+ people benefit from paying for both — combined cost is around THB 1,420/month per seat.
Is Perplexity Pro worth the cost for small Thai B2B teams?
If your team does regular vendor research, competitive intel, or market analysis — yes. The citation panel alone saves hours of verification work per week. For pure strategy or content work, ChatGPT Plus is sufficient.
Which AI engine has better Thai-language sources?
Perplexity, by a wide margin in our testing. When queries reference Thailand, Perplexity returns 7–11 sources with multiple Thai-language sites included (Brand Inside, Marketing Oops, Bangkok Post). ChatGPT-5 typically returns English-only sources for the same queries.
Can ChatGPT-5 do everything Perplexity does in 2026?
Almost. ChatGPT-5 added inline citations in April 2026 and its web browsing improved significantly. But Perplexity’s source surfacing is still more consistent and its citation UI is purpose-built for research workflows. The gap is narrowing but not closed.
How do I get better answers from either engine?
Frame questions with specific context — industry, company size, geography, constraint. “Compare X vs Y” beats “What’s the best X?” Specify whether you want sources or synthesis. Ask for tradeoffs explicitly. Question framing matters more than engine choice for B2B research quality.
